Some startling facts about stroke in the United States:

  • Every one in six deaths from cardiovascular disease was due to stroke
  • Every 40 seconds, someone has a stroke – every 4 minutes, someone dies of a stroke
  • About 87% of all strokes are ischemic strokes, where blood flow to the brain is blocked

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) has been shown to help prevent and treat stroke. Also, there’s been evidence to show the benefits of HBOT for post-stroke patients. The increased oxygen levels to affected areas of the brain can help recover brain functionality. Learn about the latest research and studies with HBOT treating stroke here.

How HBOT Treats Neurological Function in Post-Stroke Patients

In a randomized, prospective trial published in the National Library of Medicine, HBOT was shown to significantly improve the neurological functions of post-stroke patients – even at chronic late stages. The randomized control study looked at 74 patients who all suffered from a stroke within 6 to 36 months. All of them had at least one motor dysfunction. The patients were split up into different groups and treated with 40 HBOT sessions over various time periods.

Brain activity was monitored by SPECT imaging and neurologic functions were evaluated by different metrics such as NIHSS, ADL, and life quality. The results of the SPECT imaging showed clinical improvement in the post-stroke patients. Elevated brain activity was detected in most regions of live cells. The results of the study imply that neuroplasticity, or the ability of networks in the brain to grow and change, can be turned on long after there is damage to the brain.
