How Does Hyperbaric Oxygen Work?

At Aalto Hyperbaric, you receive treatment inside of a single-person tube-like chamber. Our chambers are made of state-of-the-art clear acrylic, allowing you to see outside of the chamber. During HBOT, you’re instructed to lie down and breathe the 100% pure oxygen inside the tube, as the pressure is gradually increased.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy has several key benefits as you get treated:

  • HBOT brings oxygen-rich plasma to tissue starved for oxygen to heal wounds. A wound damaged the body’s blood vessel and causes your tissue to swell. The pressure in the HBOT chamber increases the amount of oxygen to the blood to reduce the swelling and tissue damage in your body.
  • HBOT helps block harmful bacteria and strengthens the body’s immune system. HBOT increases oxygen concentration in the tissues to resist infection. It also improves the white blood cells in your body to fight off infection.
  • HBOT promotes the creation of collagen (connective tissue) and skin cells. It does so by improving new blood vessel formation. Additionally, it stimulates cells to produce certain compounds, such as vascular endothelial growth elements. These draw and stimulate endothelial tissues essential for recovery.

The session can last from 60 to 90 minutes. Your ears might feel like the pressure is elevated, such as when you are in a plane or in high elevation. Swallowing or chewing gum will pop your ears back into normal hearing levels. During HBOT, your blood carries the excess oxygen through the body, infusing the injured cells with oxygen in order to start recovery. Once the session is done, you might feel lightheaded.

HBOT is a scientifically proven way to treat a multitude of conditions and injuries, such as traumatic brain injury (TBI) and sports injuries.

Types of Hyperbaric Chambers

There are two types of hyperbaric chambers:

  • Monoplace chamber. A single-person HBOT chamber. These chambers afford you the privacy and luxury of receiving HBOT treatment by yourself.

  • Multiplace chamber. A chamber that fits more than one person. The difference between a monoplace chamber and a multiplace chamber is that a multiplace chamber has individuals breathe oxygen through hoods or masks.

Our hyperbaric chambers are one of the few 100% oxygen monoplace chambers that are FDA-approved.
