Although hyperbaric oxygen treatment (HBOT) is used worldwide in human medicine, with many scientific studies reporting the benefits, its use in veterinary medicine is relatively new. In the last 10 years, hyperbaric chamber technology has been used by a few veterinary clinics across the United States.

Hyperbaric oxygen, treatment puts the patient in a safe and comfortable chamber with 100 percent oxygen pressure, increasing the atmospheric pressure. Treatments can last from 60 minutes to two hours, usually given more in multiple sessions per day or per week. Most patients find hyperbaric oxygen treatment calm and relaxing and even fall asleep.

Can hyperbaric oxygen therapy promote healing in dogs?

According to the College of Veterinary Medicine,  hyperbaric oxygen treatment leads to a decrease in swelling, stimulation of new blood vessel formation to the healing/swollen tissue, a decrease in stress brought on by head or spinal cord injuries, enhanced recovery, and improved disease management. Hyperbaric oxygen treatment assists veterinary patients by speeding up the recovery process to decrease or remove the need for more invasive procedures like surgery, often saving pet owners time and money.

Some conditions that can benefit from veterinary Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy are:

  • Swelling – post operative, crush injuries, snake bite, burns
  • Trauma – internal, head, spinal cord
  • Smoke Inhalation
  • Carbon monoxide toxicity
  • Pancreatitis
  • Intervertebral disc disease
  • Arthritis
  • Non-healing wounds, particularly external wounds where there are concerns about blood supply

Are there side effects with HBOT for dogs?

Most of the time, hyperbaric therapy has little to no side effects on patients. However, some side effects may be ear issues, blurry vision, or barotrauma. It’s suggested to have a follow-up appointment to be certain that your pet is okay.
