Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy For Depression
The research on the effects of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) on depression and anxiety is a new and evolving field, with promising studies linking the beneficial effects of HBOT and depression.
In a recent study, sixty patients with incomplete spinal cord injury (ISCI) combined with depression and anxiety were randomly divided into three groups, an HBOT group (20 cases), a psychotherapy group (20 cases), and a conventional rehabilitation control group (20 cases). All patients received routine rehabilitation; however, in HBOT group and psychotherapy group, patients also received HBO and psychotherapy, respectively.
Effects of HBOT for Depression
These treatments lasted for a total of 2 weeks (after per day and 6 days a week). Before and after 8 months of therapy, depression and stress, nerve function, and activities of daily living were, respectively, assessed based on Hamilton Depression (HAMD) scale, Hamilton Anxiety (HAMA) scale, American Spinal Injury Association score, along with an operational independence measure score in most patients.
Following 8 weeks of therapy, HAMD score was considerably lower in both HBOT type and psychotherapy group than in the control group (all P < .05), but there was no statistical difference in HAMD score between HBOT group and psychotherapy group (P > .05). HAMA score was considerably lower in HBOT group than in control group (P < .05), but there was no statistical difference in HAMA score between HBOT group and psychotherapy group, and between psychotherapy group and control group (all P > .05).
Following 8 weeks of therapy, American Spinal Injury Association and operational independence measure scores were considerably greater in HBOT group than in both control and psychological groups, and higher in the psychotherapy group than in the control group (all P < .05).
The effects of HBOT on depression and stress are like that of psychotherapy. HBOT can significantly enhance nerve function and activities of daily living in patients with ISCI, which psychotherapy or routine rehab treatment can’t substitute.
