Fibromyalgia Treatment

Fibromyalgia Treatment

Fibromyalgia is a disorder that is characterized as widespread chronic pain. Sufferers deal with a lot of musculoskeletal pain and fatigue, which impairs sleep, memory, and mood. There is no exact reason why people get fibromyalgia, but researchers believe it is in the central nervous system breaking down. The brain confuses painful and nonpainful stimuli, resulting in painful sensations amplified through the spinal cord and nerves.

Living with fibromyalgia is a painful experience with little relief. To make it worse, it often comes from a traumatic event like extreme physical trauma or psychological stress. Other times, it just gradually progresses without a point of cause.

There is currently no cure for fibromyalgia, but there are fibromyalgia treatment options that include medication, stress-reducing activities like exercise, and now, hyperbaric chamber therapy.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Benefits

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a process of putting more oxygen into the blood. A person enters a high-pressure chamber and breathes oxygen. The combination of the high pressure and the oxygen results in increased blood oxygen levels that provides many benefits to the body.

Hyperbaric chamber uses treat areas of the body where reduced oxygen or blood flow have caused problems and disorders. Treating fibromyalgia with hyperbaric therapy is beneficial because it treats many of the symptoms that cause sufferers’ pain, including:

  • Interstitial cystitis
  • Inflammation in joints and general widespread inflammation
  • Headaches
  • Mental fatigue

These symptoms can contribute to the stiffness in joints causing pain and tenderness. They are main contributors to fatigue too because pain keeps those with fibromyalgia from getting sleep. The Mayo Clinic has said that there is no permanent damage done to joints, but it is still difficult to manage the pain.

Research in Hyperbaric Treatment as a Fibromyalgia Treatment

There are several studies that have been done that show improvement in fibromyalgia symptoms with hyperbaric treatment. One study showed the sensitivity to pain decreased with the use of a hyperbaric chamber. Those who used the therapy showed a significant difference and found their symptoms much easier to manage.

Another study looked at the effects of hyperbaric chamber therapy on the cellular level in treating fibromyalgia. Through using hyperbaric chamber therapy, overactive areas of the brain calmed down and other areas that were underactive became more active. Research has shown that hyperbaric oxygen therapy helps improve cerebral vascular flow, regenerates white matter and stimulates axon growth, strengthens blood-brain barrier integrity, and reduces brain edema and inflammation. From this historical information, the results found supported those conclusions too.

A third study was done in 2019 which also concluded that hyperbaric chamber oxygen therapy was effective at treating symptoms of fibromyalgia. A majority of those who were treated with hyperbaric oxygen therapy found that their pain scores and anxiety levels decreased. Fatigue and fibromyalgia symptoms were decreased. The two areas that saw no change were depression and quality of sleep.

THE AALTO DIFFERENCE

At Aalto Hyperbaric Medical Group, we value scientific evidence and innovation, so we send our doctors to meetings held by the European Underwater and Baromedical Society, Hyperbaric Medicine International Society, Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society, American College of Hyperbaric Medicine, and the International Hyperbarics Association every year.

Ready to Try It?

If you suffer from fibromyalgia or know someone who does, give hyperbaric chamber therapy a try. People who do not have fibromyalgia are also welcome to come for increased recovery and improved mental performance. There are a lot of benefits that can help improve symptoms and general quality of life.

The process is simple. Patients just come in and are placed in a high-pressure chamber with oxygen flow. There are no special exercises or diets required before coming. Each treatment generally lasts between 30 minutes and 2 hours.
