Fibromyalgia is a disorder with symptoms such as, “musculoskeletal pain accompanied by fatigue, memory, sleep and mood problems. Symptoms often start after physical injury, surgery, illness, or significant emotional strain. In other instances, the symptoms accumulate over time without a single triggering event. Other characteristics of fibromyalgia are stress headaches, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, irritable bowel syndrome, depression, and anxiety.
Though there is no cure for fibromyalgia, there are different ways you can treat it and reduce the discomfort. HBOT has been shown in clinical trials as an effective and rapid treatment option for fibromyalgia.
HBOT Treatment for Fibromyalgia
According to the National Library of Medicine, hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) seems to be capable of relieving some of the symptoms of fibromyalgia. Clinical trials around HBOT studied the efficacy of treating fibromyalgia by analyzing the symptoms of patients with fibromyalgia before and after.
Thirty-two fibromyalgia patients underwent HBOT (100% oxygen at 2.5 ata with air breaks), three days a week. (Note that not all hyperbaric oxygen treatment centers use 100% oxygen unlike our centers.) The quality of life metrics the trial analyzed were:
- Pain
- Fatigue
- Quality of sleep
- Anxiety
- Depression
After the study, “pain scores and the symptoms of anxiety (but not those of depression) significantly improved after both 10 and 20 sessions, whereas fatigue and [fibromyalgia] symptom severity scores significantly improved only after 20 sessions.” There was no quality of sleep different, and the trial did not find any major side effects.
The findings of this clinical trial support HBOT as a treatment for fibromyalgia.

HBOT for Fibromyalgia for Women
HBOT has been shown to treat fibromyalgia in a clinical trial with women. A randomized controlled trial of 49 women with fibromyalgia separated them into 3 groups: one treated with HBOT, another with physical exercise, and a control group. Quality of life metrics analyzed were: allergic exhaustion, perceived pain, pressure pain threshold, endurance and operational capability, physical performance and cortical excitability.
The clinical trial saw pain, functional capacity, and physical performance significantly improved for HBOT and exercise. We can see that HBOT significantly improved the physical symptoms of the women with fibromyalgia.
